Māori Tāngata Whenua Gallery

Ongoing

Learn about taonga (cultural treasures) of Murihiku (southern New Zealand).

The Māori gallery contains a wealth of important taoka (treasures) from the Murihiku/Southland region. Here you can see how southern Māori people lived, worked and played in pre-European times through a variety of exhibits ranging from: fishing to hunting, tool making to games. Explore the intricate designs of the carvings and pounamu jewellery and wonder at the skill and stamina required to paddle the waka (canoe) on the stormy seas of Foveaux Strait.

Over the next few months we will be gradually replacing the old and outdated signs with new and improved labelling, in an effort to give the Māori collection the mana and respect it deserves. Thank you for your patience during this time.
