FUN AND FURY – EWAN McDOUGALL
12 August – 29 October 2017
The Southland Museum & Art Gallery Niho o te Taniwha is pleased to present Fun and Fury, an exciting and dynamic survey exhibition of the past twenty years from Dunedin-based artist Ewan McDougall.
McDougall is a colourful and witty neo-expressionistic painter whose modus operandi is primitive figures, heavy impasto, and lurid colour. His method is to ‘whack some colour on it and then quickly start painting’.
In Ewan McDougall’s own words Fun and Fury is ‘a feast of vibrant colour, impasto, and wildly dancing figuration drawing from the mad exuberance of the party life – the anger and sadness of the descent and the joy of recovery’.
To date, McDougall has had 85 solo exhibitions within New Zealand and many international exhibitions. The painter has been a multiple finalist and prize-winner in numerous New Zealand art awards; a highlight being a ten-time finalist in New Zealand’s prestigious Sir James Wallace Art Awards.
This exhibition will be on display in Gallery 3 from Saturday, 12 August until Sunday, 29 October 2017, at the Southland Museum & Art Gallery, 108 Gala Street, Invercargill.
